JCP Hatayama, ex-Lower House member, attends rally calling for return of ‘northern territories’

Hatayama Kazuya, a former member of the House of Representatives and the vice chair of the Japanese Communist Party Hokkaido Prefectural Committee, on August 29 attended as a guest at a rally held in Hokkaido’s Sapporo City to urge the swiftest possible return of the Russian-held “northern territories”.

Eighty years since Russia’s illegal occupation, the rally in which people from Hokkaido and Tohoku regions participated, adopted a resolution demanding that the Japanese government and the Diet engage resolutely in diplomatic negotiations to achieve the return of four islands (Kunashiri, Etorofu, Habomai, and Shikotan).

The resolution also demands that safe fishery operations be ensured in the waters surrounding the four islands.
