September 28, 2025
The Japan-South Korea Exchange Festival, an annual event aimed at promoting grassroots cultural exchanges between the two countries, took place on September 27 and 28 in Tokyo’s Setagaya Ward.

On the first day of the 2-day event, Japanese Communist Party Secretariat Head Koike Akira attended the opening ceremony.

Koike, who serves as an executive of the Japan-ROK Parliamentarians’ Union, exchanged greetings with the newly appointed South Korean Ambassador to Japan Lee Hyuk, and engaged in conversations with visiting executives of the ROK-Japan Parliamentarians’ Union, President of the Korean Residents Union in Japan (Mindan) Central Headquarters Kim Yi-joong.

Koike said, “The JCP will continue to work hard for the further development of good relations between Japan and South Korea. In this regard, in order to resolve historical issues, I think it is vital that Japan needs to genuinely reflect on its past war of aggression and brutal colonial rule.”

Among other speakers at the opening ceremony was Charge d’Affaires ad interim of South Korea in Japan Kim Jang Hyun. Kim referred to the 1998 Tokyo-Seoul Partnership Declaration signed by the then Japanese Prime Minister Obuchi Keizo and South Korean President Kim Dae-jung, and called for furthering relations between the two countries.
