2026 April 8 - 14 [POLITICS]

Half of total political party subsidies will go to LDP

April 11, 2026

The Ministry of Internal Affairs on April 8 decided on this year’s allocation of government subsidies to each party. The total grant amount exceeds 31.53 billion yen. The ruling Liberal Democratic Party will receive over 15.36 billion yen, accounting for 48% of the total.

Second place goes to the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, now consisting only of House of Councillors members, with approximately 3.12 billion yen, down 4.9 billion yen from the previous year.

In third place is the LDP’s coalition partner, the “Nippon Ishin no Kai” party, receiving around 2.82 billion yen. The Centrist Reform Alliance, formed just before the February general election through the merger of House of Representatives lawmakers from the CDPJ and the “Komeito” party, will receive about 2.34 billion yen.

Under the system of government subsidies, political parties divide up 250 yen in taxpayers’ money per person, including children, regardless of which party they support.

The Japanese Communist Party argues that this system violates the Constitution, which guarantees freedom of thought and belief, and has consistently refused to accept these subsidies.
