The “No more Hiroshima, no more Nagasaki, no more war!’ parade took place in New York City on April 26, drawing significant attention, ahead of the opening of the NPT Review Conference.
Members of Japanese and local peace groups marched in the parade. Shii Kazuo, the chair of the Japanese Communist Party Central Committee, and Kira Yoshiko, a JCP member of the House of Councillors, joined in this action.
Prior to the parade, a rally was held in front of the New York Public Library.
Hamasumi Jiro, secretary general of the Japan Confederation of A- and H-Bomb Sufferers Organizations (Nihon Hidankyo), stated, “A-bomb survivors (Hibakusha) have consistently claimed that nuclear weapons and humanity cannot coexist.”
In conjunction with the NPT Review Conference, Nihon Hidankyo will hold an atomic bomb exhibition at the UN Headquarters. Hamasumi said, “Please come and learn about the horrendous experiences of the survivors, and let’s work together to achieve a world without nuclear weapons!”
Shimada Yuhi, a member of the Japan Council against A and H Bombs (Japan Gensuikyo), said that many young people in Japan feel fear and anger toward ongoing wars, the strengthening of “nuclear deterrence”, and nuclear arms expansion. He called on the crowd to rise up together to prevent humanity from facing additional catastrophes.
On the same day, the international conference “Tectonic Geopolitical Changes: Which Way to Peace & A Nuclear Weapon-Free World” took place at Scandinavia House on Park Avenue. The conference was cosponsored by 12 organizations, including the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), the International Peace Bureau, and the Japan Gensuikyo. Representatives from civil society around the world spoke about their efforts to challenge the concept of “nuclear deterrence” and work toward the abolition of nuclear weapons.
