JCP and Civil Alliance will back Governor Denny in Okinawa gubernatorial race

August 26, 2026
The Japanese Communist Party on August 25 held a meeting with the Civil Alliance in the Diet building and received a briefing on the alliance’s new campaign.

Sasaki Hiroshi, a co-leader of the Civil Alliance, announced the launch of the “We are the sovereign! Policy proposals starting with each and every one of us” campaign. He also announced that the alliance will start another campaign in support of Governor Tamaki Denny in the Okinawa gubernatorial election slated for September 13, and requested JCP cooperation.

JCP Secretariat Head Koike Akira explained that, in preparation for next year’s nationwide local elections, the JCP is developing a dialogue-based, participatory campaign. He said, “Learning from the U.S. DSA party, the JCP intends to formulate an election manifesto based on dialogue with voters as well as on the results of a questionnaire survey. I think our campaign has commonalities with yours.”

Koike pointed out that the upcoming Okinawa election will be of great importance for the current political landscape. He stated, “We will fight with all our might to secure Governor Denny’s victory,” and expressed his hope that support from the Civil Alliance in the gubernatorial election will be a major boost.

JCP member of the House of Representatives Tatsumi Kotaro was also present at the meeting and exchanged views on each campaign with the Civil Alliance.
