September 15, 2026

In the Okinawa local elections held on September 13 which took place concurrently with the Okinawa gubernatorial election, the Japanese Communist Party fielded 15 candidates in 13 municipal assembly elections and all were elected.

In Haebaru Town, both an incumbent and a newcomer won, enabling the JCP to increase its seats from one to two.

In Ie Village, the JCP regained a seat by winning the top spot on the ballot and secured the first-ever seat held by a woman in the village history.

In Ginowan City hosting the U.S. Marine Corps Futenma Air Station, a JCP candidate won reelection by advocating for the unconditional return of the Futenma base.

In Nago City where the construction of a new U.S. military base is underway under the the pretext of returning the U.S. Futenma base to Japan, a JCP candidate who has consistently opposed the new base project was elected to his third term.

In Ishigaki City, where the deployment of long-range missiles and the evacuation of residents in the event of a contingency are under consideration, the incumbent JCP candidate retained her seat by increasing her vote count.

In Okinawa City, amid a fiercely contested race, the JCP successfully defended its two existing seats.
