Cross-party parliamentarians’ league formed to reform retrial system to save victims of wrongful convictions

Pointing out that the miscarriage of justice constitutes one of the gravest violations of human rights, the cross-party group aims to achieve an early amendment of the provisions regarding retrials in the Criminal Procedure Code.

In an international comparison of the percentage of female parliamentarians, Japan ranks 164th out of 186 countries. A law which aims to equalize candidates between men and women, was enacted in Japan in 2018, but the law has no binding force.

The UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities examined the state of progress of Japanese measures, finding that Japan is far from a society where persons with disabilities can participate in in the same way as persons without disabilities.
