JCP Yokohama city assemblymember calls for cancellation of Nissan’s downsizing plan

May 30, 2025
Japanese Communist Party member of the Yokohama City Assembly Shirai Masako on May 28 said that as the city government had given Nissan a grant of five billion yen, it should urge the company to cancel its massive downsizing plan.

The Yokohama City government since 2005 paid a total of five billion yen in subsidies to Nissan based on an ordinance to promote the establishment of business facilities aimed at increasing job opportunities in the city. In addition, the city provided the auto maker various financial support such as the 1.9 billion yen reduction in its fixed asset tax. Meanwhile, Nissan in its financial report as of the end of March 2025 stated that it increased its internal reserves to 3.4 trillion yen.

At a city assembly meeting, JCP Shirai demanded that Mayor Yamanaka Takeharu request Nissan to refrain from conducting unnecessary downsizing and consider implementing turnaround measures which put the protection of employment first and foremost.

The JCP assemblyperson pointed out that the number of Nissan-related companies and Nissan subcontractors in Yokohama exceeds 800. She said that the city government should take measures that place the highest priority on maintaining jobs at those companies as well as on protecting and boosting local economies. She also said that the city government should use its financial resources to strengthen support for local businesses.
