Japanese and South Korean political parties, including the Japanese Communist Party and the Justice Party (South Korea), along with civil organizations on March 26 published a joint statement in opposition to the possible participation of the two countries in U.S.-Israeli military operations against Iran in the Strait of Hormuz.
The joint statement expresses opposition to the U.S.-Israeli military campaign against Iran, describing it as “an obvious aggression which seriously violates the UN Charter and international rule of law”.
The statement demands that the U.S.-Israeli war of aggression be immediately halted.
The statement also demands that the Japanese and South Korean governments refrain from allowing their respective forces to join in the ongoing military operations in the Strait of Hormuz, and that the two governments reject the use of U.S. military bases located in each country for the operation.
The statement calls for close cooperation among civil societies in East Asia. It especially calls on Japanese and Korean peoples to increase their cooperation for peacebuilding while striving to overcome the historical issues caused by Japan’s past war of aggression and its colonial rule in Asia.
In the joint statement, these parties and civil groups expressed their solidarity with global peace movements.
Those who signed this statement include: from Japan, the Social Democratic Party, the Greens Japan, the Japan Council against A and H Bombs, the Japan Peace Committee, and “No More Okinawa Battle, Nuchi du Takara (Life itself is a treasure)” alongside the JCP; from South Korea, the Green Party Korea, the Labor Party, “Platform C”, “Road to Equality Paved by Workers”, and the People’s Solidarity for Social Progress alongside the Justice Party.
