On 70th founding anniversary, Hidankyo renews its resolve to ensure no more A-bomb victims

October 8, 2026

The Japan Confederation of A- and H-Bomb Sufferers Organizations (Nihon Hidankyo) held a celebration on October 7 in Tokyo to commemorate the 70th anniversary of its founding, renewing its resolve to ensure that there are never again victims of atomic bombings.

Japanese Communist Party Executive Committee Chair Tamura Tomoko attended this event.

Tamura, referring to the awarding of the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize to Hidankyo, pointed out that Hidankyo’s campaign calling for abolishing nuclear weapons and providing state compensation to Hibakusha has inspired people in Japan and in the rest of the world. She expressed her determination, saying, “The JCP will carry on with this campaign which displays a strong commitment to abolish nuclear weapons and bring an end to wars worldwide.”

Hidankyo representative director Tanaka Terumi criticized nuclear powers for continuing to engage in nuclear intimidation. He said, “We need to attract more young people to our movement. We, Hidankyo, will work together with all people demanding the abolition of nuclear arms to push the Japanese government to join the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and take the lead in global efforts to achieve a nuclear-free world.”

Guest speakers at the celebration included lawmakers of the Liberal Democratic Party, the Democratic Party for the People, the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, the “Komeito” party, the “Inochi no To” party, and the Social Democratic Party. In addition, representatives of the mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki spoke.
