JCP welcomes Diet resolution calling for carbon-free Japan

November 21, 2020

The Upper House on November 20 followed the previous day's unanimous adoption of a resolution in the Lower House declaring a state of climate emergency. Cross-party initiators of the resolution include Japanese Communist Party Secretariat Head Koike Akira and Ichida Tadayoshi and Yamashita Yoshiki, both JCP vice chairs.

In response to the Upper House adoption of the resolution, JCP Policy Commission Chair Tamura Tomoko at a press conference welcomed the resolution adopted in both chambers, expressing the party's determination to work to establish a carbon-free Japan.

Tamura noted that 170 local governments already issued declarations aspiring to realize zero GHG emissions, and added, "Toward establishing a carbon-free Japan, our party will proactively discuss with other political parties what to do with coal-fired power generation and we should demand in a suprapartisan way that the government break away from coal-fired power.”
