Gov’t workers’ union asks for JCP cooperation in adding more workers to immigration and juvenile facilities

June 1, 2021
A Justice Ministry workers’ union, which is affiliated with the National Confederation of Trade Unions (Zenroren), on May 28 submitted to Japanese Communist Party parliamentarians a petition with 33,500 signatures calling for increasing the number of workers at legal affairs bureaus, detention centers for immigrants and juveniles, and rehabilitation facilities for criminal offenders.

In the petitioning, union chair Nishiyama Yoshiharu said that an increase in the number of Justice Ministry workers is vital to carry out people-oriented services. Stating that his union has been working to increase public awareness of this matter, Nishiyama asked for the JCP’s cooperation in realizing the union’s demand.

In response, JCP member of the House of Representatives Fujino Yasufumi cited that in 2019 in the Diet, then Justice Minister Yamashita Takashi replied to Fujino that he will work to increase the number of legal affairs bureau staff. Furthermore, the JCP lawmaker said, “I think it is also necessary to increase the number of staff members at detention facilities for immigrants and juveniles from the viewpoint of human rights protection. Together with the union, I’ll work hard to achieve success in the union’s effort to push the government to hire more workers.”
