No.2 reactor at Shimane NPP passes NRA’s safety screening

June 24, 2021
The Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA) on June 23 published an assessment report recognizing that the No.2 reactor at Chugoku Electric Power Company’s Shimane nuclear power plant (Shimane Pref.) satisfies the new safety standards for the resumption of operations.

Later in the same day, the Japanese Communist Party Shimane prefectural organization and JCP local assembly members took to the streets near the prefectural office building to protest against the NRA’s report.

JCP member of the Shimane Prefectural Assembly Omura Toshinari pointed out that an active fault of 140 meters runs right beneath the Shimane NPP and that not only the NPP operator, but also the prefectural government has yet to drawn up an effective evacuation plan in case of a nuclear emergency. He appealed for the need to achieve a JCP advance and a strengthening of opposition/citizens collaboration in the coming general election in order to enact an opposition-proposed bill to put an end to reliance on nuclear power generation.

Shimane is the only prefecture hosting a nuclear power plant at its prefectural capital, Matsue City. Important functions of the prefectural and city governments are concentrated in the area within ten kilometers from the NPP. In addition, around 460,000 people live within a 30 kilometer radius where the formulation of an evacuation plan is mandatory.
