Hidankyo asks for JCP’s cooperation in improving government support for 2nd-generation Hibakusha

April 23, 2022
The Japan Confederation of A- and H-Bomb Sufferers Organizations (Nihon Hidankyo) on April 22 asked Japanese Communist Party parliamentarians Kasai Akira and Inoue Satoshi for their cooperation to push the government to improve its measures to support second-generation survivors of the atomic bombings (Hibakusha).

In the petitioning, Hidankyo handed to the two JCP lawmakers a report on its survey of second-generation Hibakusha which was compiled in October last year, and called for the JCP efforts to press the government to conduct a similar survey.

Hidankyo Assistant Secretary Hamasumi Jiro, who is in charge of the second-generation Hibakusha issue, said, “Based on the survey report, we have drawn up a list of demands for the government, including conducting a state survey of second-generation Hibakusha, improving the government medical checkup service for them, and providing cancer checkups for them. We’ll work hard to increase public support and call on the government to realize our demands.”

In response, JCP Inoue said, “Taking into account that unlike injuries of conventional weapons, those of atomic weapons have unique characteristics, I’ll urge the government to establish a system that will provide support to all A-bomb victims.”
