JCP Central Committee chair interacts with representatives of parties at ICAPP General Assembly

November 25, 2024

Japanese Communist Party Central Committee Chair Shii Kazuo, participating in the 12th General Assembly of the International Conference of Asian Political Parties (ICAPP) in Phnom Penh, engaged in vigorous discussions with representatives of political parties from various countries.

With representatives of Mexico, Shii discussed the progress which had led up to the formulation of a nuclear-free zone treaty in Latin America and the Caribbean as well as the progress in implementing the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) in Latin America and the Caribbean.

With representatives of the Mongolian People’s Party, Shii listened to their accounts of efforts to have their government ratify the TPNW, and discussed ways to further promote the treaty.

With representatives of Nepalese parties, he learned about the important role Nepalese leftist parties are playing in national politics, and exchanged views on climate change issues such as the melting of the Himalayan glaciers.

Shii spoke with representatives of three parties from Indonesia: the Golkar Party, the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle, and the Welfare and Justice Party. Each of the representatives said they took note that Shii in his speech given in the assembly expressed his opposition to the genocide in Gaza. Shii and they confirmed that they will stand in solidarity with Palestinians under the banner of “Stop the Genocide by Israel!” They also discussed the importance of the issue of national self-determination, including the right of the Palestinian people to establish an independent government.

To Shii, Iranian representatives said, “It was very impressive to hear voices from Japan speaking out against the Gaza genocide.”

Shii exchanged views with representatives of Lebanon in regard to the current situation of the Israeli invasion of Lebanon, and learned about the Lebanese struggle of resistance to the illegal Israeli military attacks on civilian targets.

Representatives of the ruling party in Kenya and Shii discussed the speech delivered by the Kenyan Ambassador to the UN in relation to the Ukraine issue in which the ambassador spoke about the historical experience of the struggle of African peoples against colonial rule. They shared their common understanding that the history of colonialism is still at the root of various conflicts, pointing out that to overcome this is an important international challenge for the 21st century.

Shii and representatives of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) from Iraq talked about activities in solidarity with the movement to protect the human rights and autonomy of the Kurdish people.

The countries of the political parties Shii met with are: Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Georgia, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, South Korea, Laos, Lebanon, Malaysia, Maldives, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, Kenya, Cuba, and Mexico.
