Hiroshima Hibakusha protest Trump’s ‘A-bombings ended war’ remarks

June 28, 2025
The Hiroshima Federation of A-Bomb Sufferers’ Organizations (Hiroshima Hidankyo) on June 26 sent a letter to the U.S. Embassy in Japan, Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru, and Foreign Minister Iwaya Takeshi in protest against U.S. President Trump’s rhetoric justifying the 1945 dropping of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

About 50 A-bomb survivors (Hibakusha) and second-generation Hibakusha assembled in front of the Atomic Bomb Dome in Hiroshima City and adopted the letter of protest.

Sakuma Kunihiko of Nihon Hidankyo, who visited Oslo last year on the sidelines of the Nobel Peace Prize presentation ceremony, said, “After returning to Hiroshima, I renewed my vow at the A-bomb monument in Peace Memorial Park to strive to eliminate nuclear weapons.” He added, “As an A-bomb survivor, I cannot condone Trump’s remarks.”

Yamada Sumiko of Hiroshima Hidankyo said, “I was orphaned in the aftermath of the A-bombing at the age of two. The consequent suffering I experienced was terrible. When I learned of this news report on the Trump statement, I was shaking with anger.”

U.S. President Trump on June 25 compared the U.S. preemptive attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities to the 1945 A-bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He justified the attacks by saying, “It was essentially the same thing: that ended that war; this ended this war.”
