What’s on the programs for 2025 World Conference against A & H Bombs

July 21, 2025
The 2025 World Conference against Atomic and Hydrogen Bombs will take place in Hiroshima and Nagasaki cities, 80 years after the U.S. atomic bombings. Akahata interviewed Secretary General of the Japan Council against A & H Bombs (Japan Gensuikyo) Yasui Masakazu about the upcoming World Conference. The following is an excerpt from the interview:

This year’s Conference will be an opportunity to develop international cooperation in preparation for the UN General Assembly’s deliberations on disarmament matters this coming fall, the NPT Review Conference in April, and sessions of the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons Review Conference.

On behalf of the UN, Undersecretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs Nakamitsu Izumi will participate in this year’s annual antinuke conference. From Austria, a leading country in advocating for the TPNW, Ambassador Alexander Kmentt and former Ambassador Thomas Hajnoczi; from Egypt in the conflict-ridden Middle East, Ambassador Abdel-Moneim; and from the Non-Aligned Movement, Cuban Ambassador to Japan Gisera Garcia are also scheduled to attend the World Conference against A & H Bombs.

In addition, former leader of the British Labor Party Jeremy Corbyn; Co-chair of the Left Group in the European Parliament Martin Schirdewan; Belgian Workers’ Party parliamentarian Marc Botenga; former leader of the Green Party of England Caroline Lucas, peace and union activists from various countries, A-bomb survivors in Japan and Korea, and many others will also participate in the 2025 World Conference.

The Conference will include discussion forums between legislators and citizens, discussion forums between government representatives and citizens, workshops, field trips, and a related event of the World Trade Union Congress committed to working towards a nuclear-weapons-free world.

The A-bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 deprived 210,000 people of their lives that year alone. The surviving Hibakusha who were mobilized to work on building demolition from primary or junior high schools and who have vivid memories of that day are now in their early 90s. In order to inherit and share the memories of Hibakusha’s experiences with future generations and people around the world, special programs will be held in both Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The Japan Gensuikyo is working to ensure the success of the 2025 World Conference Against A & H Bombs.
