Seven Japanese Communist Party Dietmembers on August 8 offered flowers at the A-bomb memorial erected at ground zero within Nagasaki Peace Park.
Led by JCP Secretariat Head Koike Akira (House Councillors), House of Representatives members Tamura Takaaki, Motomura Nobuko and Tatsumi Kotaro; House of Councillors members Iwabuchi Tomo, Nihi Sohei and Shirakawa Yoko; and Nagasaki prefectural assemblymember Horie Hitomi paid their respects to the victims.
After laying the flowers, Koike said, “I vow before the victims to do my utmost to establish a government that will sign and ratify the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in order to make Nagasaki the last place to have suffered from being atomic bombed.”
The group of the JCP lawmakers, except Koike, then visited the Japanese Red Cross Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Hospital and the “Megumi no Oka” nursing home for A-bomb survivors (Hibakusha). Nagasaki prefectural assemblyperson Horie Hitomi and Nagasaki City assemblyperson Oishi Fumiki joined the visit.
JCP Lower House member Tamura said to the residents of the Hibakusha nursing home, “This year marks the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombing, and Nihon Hidankyo was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize which means that the world has heard your voices. We will continue to urge Japan to participate in the UN N-ban treaty as soon as possible.”
At the Atomic Bomb Hospital, JCP Upper House member Nihi stated that it is the responsibility of politicians to recognize those who had experienced the A-bombing in Nagasaki as Hibakusha in the same way that the ‘black rain’ victims in Hiroshima were recognized. Hospital Director Taniguchi Hideki requested that the state budget for Hibakusha administration not be reduced.”
