The Japan Council against Atomic and Hydrogen Bombs (Japan Gensuikyo) on September 19 held a reception in Tokyo to celebrate the 70th anniversary of its founding.
Japanese Communist Party Vice Chair Ogata Yasuo attended the reception and delivered a speech in solidarity on behalf of the JCP.
Japan Gensuikyo Secretary General Yasui Masakazu in his opening remarks noted that since its founding in 1955, the organization has pursued three basic goals: the prevention of nuclear war, a total ban on and the elimination of nuclear weapons, and support for and solidarity with A-bomb survivors (Hibakusha). Yasui added that Japan Gensuikyo has been committed to establishing a world without nuclear weapons and a peaceful Japan. He called for continuing to take on the challenge of achieving the abolition of nuclear weapons as it is crucial for the survival of humanity.
Along with four Japan Gensuikyo representative directors, Tanaka Terumi of the Japan Confederation of A- and H-Bomb Sufferers Organizations (Nihon Hidankyo) delivered an address in greeting. He recalled participating in the second World Conference against A and H Bombs held in Nagasaki in 1956 where he witnessed the founding of Nihon Hidankyo. He expressed his gratitude to Japan Gensuikyo for working together with Nihon Hidankyo in the broad-based anti-nuke movement ever since.
