Japanese Communist Party Central Committee Chair Shii Kazuo on November 17 met with Chung Eui-yong, chairperson of the Standing Committee of the International Conference of Asian Political Parties (ICAPP) and former South Korean Foreign Minister, in Seoul. The two held three hours of extensive discussions on issues concerning Asia and the rest of the world.
Shii and Chung agreed to cooperate toward the success of the 13th ICAPP General Assembly scheduled to take place in Seoul next year.
Shii said that the joint general assembly of the cross-party Japan-ROK and ROK-Japan parliamentarians’ unions achieved significant outcomes on November 16, including the adoption of a joint statement calling on the two governments to collaborate closely to achieve complete denuclearization and to work to establish peace on the Korean Peninsula.
Shii stated, given that North Korea is advancing its nuclear and missile technologies, all relevant countries must steadfastly maintain “the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula” as the goal of their dialogue and negotiations. He emphasized the importance of ending the Korean War and promoting the establishment of a regional peace regime in an integrated manner.
Chung provided a detailed explanation of the processes and lessons learnt from the 2018 inter-Korean and U.S.-North Korea summits, as well as the current issues on the Korean Peninsula and future prospects.
Shii talked about the JCP’s proposal entitled, “For positive breakthroughs in Japan-China relations,” as well as the JCP’s diplomatic activities based on this proposal. He said, “Overcoming obstacles and developing Japan-China relations is important not only for both countries but also for resolving pending issues in Northeast Asia, including the Korean Peninsula issues.”
Chung responded that progress in Japan-China relations will be highly significant for peace and stability in East Asia.
Shii noted that the ICAPP affirmed its “opposition to bloc politics” and strongly called for “peacebuilding through dialogue and inclusion” in its declarations adopted at the Istanbul General Assembly (2022) and the Phnom Penh General Assembly (2024). He emphasized the importance of this stance.
Chung stated that the ICAPP represents an ideal vision for Asia and the world. In response, Shii said, “Without aspiring to an ideal, the reality won’t change.”
Shii then introduced the party’s ongoing efforts to conduct exchange activities and theoretical exchanges with left-wing progressive forces in Europe and the United States.
Chung outlined the ICAPP’s vision to strengthen its relationships with political parties in Europe, Africa, and Latin America.
