An unveiling ceremony of a monument celebrating the Nobel Peace Prize-winning Nihon Hidankyo (Japan Confederation of A- and H-Bomb Survivors Organizations) took place on March 8 in the Nagasaki Peace Park in Nagasaki City.
The front of the monument’s pedestal is inscribed with words from the late Yamaguchi Senji’s speech at the United Nations, “No More Hiroshima, No More Nagasaki, No More War and No More Hibakusha!” On the left side, a stainless-steel panel engraved with Article 9 of the Constitution in Japanese and English is embedded.
Japanese Communist Party Nagasaki Prefectural Committee Chair Horie Hitomi, who is also a member of the Nagasaki Prefectural Assembly, along with Nagasaki City Mayor Suzuki Shiro joined in the ceremony.
In the ceremony, Nagasaki A-bomb Survivors Council President Tanaka Shigemitsu delivered a speech. Referring to the ongoing U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran, he said, “The number of war victims continues to rise. In times like this, we need to hold the Constitution’s pacifist principle up high. I hope the monument will serve as a beacon of peace in our efforts to pass down the call for world peace on to future generations and to abolish nuclear weapons without fail.”
