The Civil Alliance on April 5 organized the “NO War! YES Article 9!” rally near Ikebukuro Station in Tokyo, with around 6,000 concerned citizens participating. Seven pro-constitution opposition parties, including the Japanese Communist Party, took part in the event.
JCP Executive Committee Chair Tamura Tomoko, JCP Secretariat Head Koike Akira, and JCP Policy Commission Chair Yamazoe Taku participated in this joint action, the second rally of this kind since February.
Tamura emphasized, “The voices of the people are the greatest force to stop war and prevent any form of war cooperation,” and called on the crowd, “Let us urge the Japanese government to take action to end the ongoing U.S.-Israeli war of aggression against Iran.”
Representatives from the Social Democratic Party, the New Socialist Party, the Centrist Reform Alliance, the “Reiwa Shinsengumi” party, the Greens Japan, and the Tokyo Seikatsusha Network also gave speeches.
Sasaki Hiroshi, a co-leader of the Civil Alliance, explained the importance of civic solidarity, stating, “The current Constitution of Japan was born from a solemn pledge never to wage war. It is always the people who shape history. It is we who stop conflicts and create hope through democracy.”
Nagao Utako of “FemiBridge Tokyo,” a group composed mainly of female members of the Civil Alliance, expressed concern that the current situation in the Diet, including the acquisition of the right to collective self-defense under the security-related legislation, the possible establishment of an “anti-espionage law,” and tax hikes for arms buildup, are leading the country down the path to potential war.
Kawasaki Akira, representing the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) and Peace Boat, appealed for the creation of a world without nuclear weapons or war through full implementation of Japan’s pacifist Constitution and the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.
Harada Hiromi, the newly-elected JCP mayor of Kiyose City, spoke as a special guest. She expressed her determination, stating, “As mayor, I will fulfill my responsibility to guarantee children the right to live in peace.”
