Kasai Akira, deputy chair of the International Commission of the Japanese Communist Party (and former member of the House of Representatives), attended the 8th Congress of the Party of the European Left, which opened in Brussels on April 17.
In his guest address, Kasai proposed further developing cooperation between Japan and Europe on three key points for global peace: ending wars that violate the UN Charter and international law, preventing large-scale military buildups, and promoting the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.
Introducing himself, Kasai noted that as a second-generation Hiroshima A-bomb survivor (Hibakusha), he had served as a Dietmember for 25 years, participated in major anti-nuclear rallies across Europe, and deepened exchanges with left-wing European lawmakers. He stated, “Now is the time to strengthen international solidarity toward working together for a ‘world without nuclear weapons’ .”
After his speech, representatives from various political parties approached him one after another to exchange views and engage in discussions.
