JCP EC Chair Tamura speaks at SDP convention

April 29, 2026

Japanese Communist Party Executive Committee Chair Tamura Tomoko delivered a speech as a guest at the Socialist Democratic Party 21st convention held in Tokyo on April 29.

Along with Tamura, Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan Secretary General Tanabu Masayo and New Socialist Party Secretary General Sugimori Hiroyuki also spoke as guests.

Tamura referred to the deployment of long-range missiles to Self-Defense Forces bases, the full lifting of the ban on arms exports, and the move toward a revision of the three key national security-related documents, and pointed out that war preparations unprecedented in the postwar era are underway. She criticized the Takaichi government for pushing this rightward shift at an accelerating pace.

Tamura stated that in the House of Representatives, all parties other than the JCP have indicated a stance supportive of bills that aim to set up a national intelligence council and adversely affect people’s livelihoods, which can be considered as an “all-are-ruling-party” setup.

At the same time, Tamura said, more and more people have been standing up to protect the Constitution. She stressed that in further strengthening this grassroots movement, the joint struggle by the JCP and the SDP would play a role as a beacon.

In this regard, Tamura reported that leaders of the JCP and the SDP, in their meeting held soon after the inauguration of the Takaichi government, agreed to “promote solid cooperation focused on defending the Constitution”. The JCP chair said that the development of the JCP-SDP cooperation, which can be seen by the appearance of Tamura and Fukushima in both parties’ newspapers, and the joint struggle between the JCP, the SDP, and the NSP have contributed to establishing collaboration between pro-constitutional parties and concerned citizens.

Tamura in conclusion said, “In order to build majority support among the general public to protect the Constitution, let us work hard together and encourage each other!”
