More than half of companies still do not have women board members. This was shown in the latest survey results which Japan’s major private credit research firm released on August 21.
In a survey on corporate awareness of promoting women conducted by Teikoku Databank Ltd. in 2026 with responses from 10,518 companies, the proportion of women in managerial positions hit a record high of 11.3% while the percentage of companies without female executive members stood at 51.5%.
The proportion of female managers is highest in small businesses at 13.9%, followed by 11.7% in small- and mid-sized enterprises and 8.9% in large corporations. The larger a company is in size, the lower the proportion of female managers.
In the same survey, while 29.6% of companies anticipated the proportion of female managers to increase, 43.8% said it will remain unchanged.
