Proposed relocation site for Tsukiji market turns to liquid after quake

March 17, 2011
Soil liquefaction due to the March 11 massive earthquake has been confirmed at the proposed site for the planned relocation of the Tsukiji fish market.

This was identified by the Japanese Communist Party Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly members’ group on March 12, the day after the earthquake, when they conducted an investigation at the site in the Toyosu district of Koto Ward where a Tokyo Gas plant was previously located.

“The Tokyo Metropolitan Government should provide to Tokyo residents full disclosure after thoroughly examining how the entire proposed site was affected by the earthquake and whether or not contaminated materials escaped to the surface of the site,” said the JCP Tokyo assembly members group.

The Toyosu district of Koto Ward of Tokyo was developed in the 1930s by the Tokyo government’s reclamation project in the Tokyo Bay.
