2010 March 10 - 16 [SCANDAL]

Sub-contractors of ‘Monju’ make political donations to governor

March 16, 2010
Three sub-contractors in Fukui Prefecture, which actually operate the fast-breeder reactor “Monju” in Tsuruga City in Fukui Prefecture, have provided more than 10 million yen in political donations to the “Monju”-hosting mayor and governor by purchasing fundraising tickets, according to Akahata.

They also made political donations to Liberal Democratic Party lawmakers.

These three companies were awarded public contracts by the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), a government-funded organization, to operate “Monju”.

Akahata revealed that many retired ministry officials obtained executive posts at both JAEA and with the “Monju”-sub-contractors.

Japanese Communist Party member of the House of Representatives Yoshii Hidekatsu stated, “JAEA has used more than two trillion yen of tax money to operate ‘Monju’, including payments to sub-contractors. This is absolutely unacceptable because the political donations that the ‘Monju’-hosting mayor and governor received from sub-contractors are in actuality people’s tax money. The government should investigate this matter.”
