Tokyoites protest against Governor Ishihara’s remark over US military noise pollution

October 24, 2012
Tokyo residents on October 23 protested against Governor Ishihara Shintaro’s remark that to file a lawsuit against U.S. military aircraft noise pollution is “nonsense”.

They are residents living near the U.S. Yokota Air Base in Tokyo who plan to file a lawsuit to seek an injunction against U.S. aircraft flights.

The Tokyo governor, at a press conference on October 19, called the plaintiffs “egoists,” and said, “There is no such noise that will keep them from falling asleep.”

The plaintiffs’ representative Ono Yoshikazu referred to the 2005 ruling made by the Tokyo High Court which states that it is abnormal for a law-governed nation to have no compensation system for noise pollution caused by military aircraft. He demanded that Governor Ishihara take measures to give relief to the victims.
