JCP will support anti-Hashimoto candidate in Osaka gubernatorial race

October 16, 2015
The Japanese Communist Party in Osaka will support the Liberal Democratic Party assemblyperson who declared her candidacy as an independent for the Osaka gubernatorial election slated for November 22. The essence of the race will be “Osaka Ishin no Kai” led by Osaka City Mayor Hashimoto Toru versus a coalition of anti-Hashimoto Osakans.

A citizens’ organization, the Association for a Bright and Democratic Osaka Administration of which the Osaka JCP is also a member, and the Osaka committee of the JCP held a joint press conference on October 15 at the Osaka prefectural government office building and announced that they will work together to help bring a victory to Kurihara Takako, policy chief of the LDP Osaka prefectural assemblypersons’ group, in the upcoming governor’s race. Her main contender will be incumbent Governor Matsui Ichiro, secretary-general of Osaka Ishin no Kai.

In the Osaka City mayoral election scheduled for the same day as the gubernatorial race, the JCP already expressed its support for Yanagimoto Akira, former secretary-general of the LDP city assemblypersons’ group. His rival will also be the Osaka Ishin no Kai-backed candidate who was a member of the House of Representatives.

In the press conference, Maeda Hiroshi of the civic group criticized the local governments under control of Osaka Ishin no Kai for discarding public welfare services one after another. Maeda said, “We can no longer tolerate Hashimoto’s way of conducting politics.”
