Nagasaki Hibakusha object to 'state funeral' for ex-PM Abe

Nineteen organizations in Nagasaki Prefecture on July 22 released a statement in opposition to the plan to hold a government-funded "state funeral" for former Prime Minister Abe Shinzo.

Tanaka Shigemitsu, who heads the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Survivors' Council, said that Hibakusha were irate about Abe's call for Japan's "nuclear sharing" arrangement by taking advantage of Russia's aggression.

Kawano Koichi, who chairs the Hibakusha liaison council of the Nagasaki Prefectural Peace Movement Center, pointed out that PM Abe had never intended to sign and ratify the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. Kawano said, "I cannot understand why a state funeral should be held."
