Bikini Day rally resolves to work for success of NWC

March 1, 2017
A Bikini Day rally hosted by the Japan Council against A and H Bombs (Japan Gensuikyo) took place in Shizuoka City on February 28. Participants affirmed to make intensive efforts in the run-up to the UN Nuclear Weapons Convention slated for the end of March in NYC.

Japan Gensuikyo Secretary General Yasui Masakazu in the rally proposed special actions to achieve the success of the March conference on a Nuclear Weapons Convention in NYC.

The actions include: lobby the Japanese government to attend UN negotiating sessions which will start on March 27 at the UN Headquarters; pressure the Japanese government to make sincere efforts to work to realize the N-ban treaty; increase public opinion and civil movements in favor of the establishment of an N-ban treaty; and successfully carry out concerted actions between March 22 and March 27 as called for by Hibakusha.

Besides these proposals, Yasui also called on the participants to organize Hibakusha testimony activities and hold A-bomb photo exhibitions to make known to more people the reality of the aftermath of the atomic bombings.

The Gensuikyo head said that this year’s Bikini Day events are taking place amid the epoch-making developments in the international arena regarding the start of NWC negotiations. “As talks on an N-ban treaty will commence, it has become ever more important for the Japanese people to increase the global support for the abolition of nuclear arms and to bring about a change in the current pro-nuclear Japanese government,” he said.

Along with speeches delivered by Hibakusha representatives, overseas peace activists and Japanese grassroots groups’ leaders, Japanese Communist Party member of the House of Representatives Ohira Yoshinobu spoke as a guest at the rally.
