Shii issues statement condemning N. Korean missile launches

March 7, 2017
North Korea in the morning of March 6 again launched ballistic missiles toward the Sea of Japan. Reportedly, three of the four missiles Pyongyang fired landed in the Japanese Exclusive Economic Zone. Japanese Communist Party Chair Shii Kazuo on the same day issued a protest statement as follows:

The series of North Korean missile tests amounts to military action inseparably linked to its nuclear weapons development, posing a serious threat to international peace and security. The conduct directly violates UNSC resolutions, the Joint Statement of the Six-Party Talks and the Japan-DPRK Pyongyang Declaration. The JCP strongly protests against North Korea’s behavior.

The international community should unite to strictly implement economic sanctions against and exert more pressure on North Korea. The world’s governments, through diplomatic negotiations, should press Pyongyang to denuclearize and also limit North Korea’s moves to further develop nuclear weapons and missiles. The important thing is for the international community to take the initiative to orient the country toward a renunciation of nuclear weapons.

As a way to discourage North Korea from the development of nuclear weapons and missiles, the success of UN meetings starting on March 27 to discuss a Nuclear Weapons Convention will be extremely important. The JCP will do its utmost to help bring about a successful conclusion of UN conferences.
