Goodbye to required wearing of high-heeled shoes

June 12, 2019
The group of women called #KuToo Campaign, which submitted 18,000 online signatures to the Labor Ministry early this month, held the rally "Goodbye to forced wearing of high-heeled shoes" in the Lower House members' office building on June 11.

The number of signatures, as of June 12, reached 27,000.

At the rally, shoemakers and former cabin attendants expressed their opposition to the socially-accepted norm that women wear high-heeled shoes.

Participants exchanged their views and feelings about high-heeled shoes, and many doubts were expressed about the assertion that it is just common sense for women or for job-seeking female students to wear such uncomfortable shoes due to a necessity in the course of their businesses or professions and due to the unspoken rule.

According to a survey conducted by the # KuToo Campaign, more than 60% answered that they have been forced to wear high-heeled shoes at workplaces or have witnessed someone being forced to wear high heels.
