Shii meets with Vietnamese Ambassador to Japan

August 19, 2020
Japanese Communist Party Chair Shii Kazuo on August 17 met with Vietnamese Ambassador to Japan Vu Hong Nam at the ambassador’s official residence in Tokyo and exchanged views concerning the ongoing fight against the coronavirus pandemic, international issues, and regional situations. They also talked about cooperation on efforts to tackle the COVID-19 crisis and other global challenges, the development of relations between the JCP and the Communist Party of Vietnam, and the promotion of friendship between the two countries.

In the meeting, Shii expressed his gratitude for the message of Vietnamese President Nguyen Phu Trong to this year’s World Conference against A- and H-Bombs which marked the 75th anniversary of the U.S. atomic bombings. The ambassador thanked the JCP for making efforts to protect the human rights of Vietnamese and other foreign residents in Japan.

Shii said that in order to end the coronavirus pandemic, Japan and Vietnam need to share experiences and strengthen joint efforts as much as possible and explained about the current status and problems of the Japanese government’s countermeasures against the pandemic. In addition, Shii pointed out that in last month’s speech gathering that commemorated the 98th anniversary of the JCP foundation, he envisaged a post-pandemic world associated with the collapse of neoliberal policies, the contradictions of global capitalism, and the necessary international cooperation to overcome the coronavirus crisis. He said, “I hope that we can endeavor to strengthen cooperation needed to tackle important global problems which address the inherent contradictions of global capitalism, the issue of nuclear weapons, climate change, and the ongoing pandemic.”

Ambassador Nam, speaking about the Vietnamese government’s measures to contain COVID-19, said that learning lessons from the previous epidemics of SARS and other diseases, with a top priority attached to the protection of people’s lives, Vietnam implemented necessary measures in a flexible manner from an early stage of the current outbreak such as border control, isolation and treatment of patients, and genome analysis. He also stressed that Vietnam, as the chair of ASEAN, will promote regional cooperation to tackle the COVID-19 crisis. Nam also spoke about efforts to achieve the success of the CPV congress scheduled for early next year.
