Ogata talks with Dutch socialist party, Belgium workers’ party, TPNW signatories meeting chair

November 16-18, 2022
Japanese Communist Party Vice Chair and International Commission Chair Ogata Yasuo on November 12 held talks with Dutch Socialist Party Secretary Arnout Hoekstra in Utrecht Province. They agreed to establish bilateral relations of friendship and solidarity.

Two days later, Ogata and Belgium Workers’ Party National Secretary Peter Mertens confirmed in their meeting in Brussels, Belgium that the JCP and the Workers’ Party will start a relationship.

Later on the same day, Ogata met with a member of the left-wing political group in the European Parliament, Helmut Scholz (German Left Party or Die Linke), at the European Parliament building in Brussels.

Ogata on November 15 visited the Austrian Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs (MFA) in Vienna and talked with Alexander Kmentt, director of the MFA’s Disarmament, Arms Control and Nonproliferation Department. Kumentt in June chaired the first meeting of States Parties to the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. The two exchanged views on future cooperation between governments and civil society movements, especially Japan’s antinuke and peace movements.

On the following day, Ogata held talks with Austrian Communist Party executives Katerina Anastasiou and Tobias Schweiger at the party head office. After that, Ogata met with Walter Baier, former director of the Party of the European Left’s think tank, Transform! Europe, at the Vienna City Hall.

These meetings took place as part of talks which a JCP delegation led by Ogata held with left-wing and progressive parties in Europe.
