Gensuikyo receives message from NPT Review Conference President

July 15, 2010
Japan Council against A & H Bombs (Japan Gensuikyo) on July 13 received a message from Libran Cabactulan, permanent representative of the Philippines at the United Nations, that expressed his hope for a success in the 2010 World Conference against A & H Bombs.

Regarding the 2010 World Conference, Cabactulan, who presided over the NPT Review Conference held in May in NY, said, “The importance and significance of this conference, which has been held since 1955, cannot be overstated. The world must not forget what happened in Hiroshima and Nagasaki and this yearly conference is an important reminder.”

Citing the fact that he met with Hibakusha in NY and received nearly seven million signatures calling for the abolition of nuclear weapons which were collected in Japan, he said, “I encourage you to continue your good work, which will help achieve the three goals of your conference and will lead us to a world free from nuclear weapons. I wish you all a successful ‘World Conference against Atomic and Hydrogen Bombs’.”

In a letter to Gensuikyo Secretary General Taka Hiroshi which was attached to the message, Cabactulan said, “Your efforts proved helpful in making the 2010 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons a resounding success.”

Taka stated, “Cabactulan’s message shows his high expectation for the role of grass-roots movements and civil society in achieving a world without nuclear weapons. In response to his expectations, we will work even harder to make a success of the World Conference annually held in Japan, the only A-bombed nation.”
