Local lawmakers object to spent N-fuel interim storage facility in Kaminoseki Town

August 16, 2023
Sitting and former local assemblypersons of two cities and four towns near Kaminoseki Town in Yamaguchi Prefecture met with the town mayor on August 15 and requested that the town government dismiss an application for a survey pertaining to a project to construct a temporary interim storage facility for spent nuclear fuel in the town.

Chugoku Electric Power Company (CEPCO) on August 2 asked Town Mayor Nishi Tetsuo for permission to allow the utility to conduct the pre-construction survey. The mayor said he will decide whether to accept the CEPCO application on his own discretion without putting the issue before the town assembly vote.

Akamatsu Yoshio, a Japanese Communist Party assembly member of Kaminoseki's neighboring town of Hirao, said to the mayor, "This is not something that affects only to your town. Please make a decision while taking into account the voices of residents and lawmakers of surrounding municipalities as well."
