JCP demands withdrawal of plan to deploy US military landing craft unit to Yokohama

August 30, 2023
The Japanese Communist Party Yokohama City Assemblymembers’ group on August 29 submitted to the U.S. Army’s Yokohama North Dock a written request demanding the cancellation and withdrawal of the planned deployment of a U.S. military landing craft unit to the base in addition to a full and immediate return of the base to the city.

The JCP document was addressed to the U.S. Army Japan and the U.S. Army Garrison Japan.

The deployment plan was agreed upon in January at a Japan-U.S. Security Consultative Committee (“2+2”) meeting. According to the plan, the stationing of the 280 member-unit will start next year.

The JCP in its document noted that together with the city government, a wide range of citizens and all political parties in the city assembly have long demanded the full and early return of the Yokohama North Dock. The JCP pointed out that the deployment of the landing craft unit will lead to the permanent use of the dock as a military base. Furthermore, the JCP stated that it is totally unacceptable that the deployment of a military unit, which may take part in an actual war, will be bulldozed through before citizens find out about it.

JCP assemblymembers’ group head Furuya Yasuhiko expressed his determination to work hard together with the city government to achieve the complete return of the North Dock.
