Shii: As demanded by UN Secretary-General’s letter, urgent action should be taken for immediate ceasefire in Gaza

December 8, 2023
Japanese Communist Party Chair Shii Kazuo on December 7 at a press conference pointed out that Israel is attacking the southern part of Gaza while ordering residents to go to this area for safety, and condemned Israel’s act as a violation of international law.

Shii then touched on a letter sent by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to the Security Council on the previous day based on Article 99 of the UN Charter.

Shii cited that the UN Secretary-General in the letter urged the members of the Security Council to move urgently to avert a horrific catastrophic situation, and said, “For the first time in 50 years, Article 99 of the UN Charter was invoked by the UN Secretary-General. This rare move is really important.”

Shii noted that the Secretary-General’s letter requested the Security Council to declare a humanitarian ceasefire, and said, “The UNSC needs to take action urgently in line with the letter. The JCP strongly demands that the Japanese government as a UNSC member make efforts to put a stop to Israel’s large-scale attacks which trample on international law and achieve an immediate ceasefire.”
