5.5 tons of radioactive water leak at Fukushima nuclear power plant

February 9 & 14, 2024

It came to light on February 8 that about 5.5 tons of water containing an estimated 22 billion becquerels of gamma-emitting radioactive substances such as cesium and strontium leaked from a building at Tokyo Electric Power Company’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant.

In response to the leakage accident, Japanese Communist Party member of the House of Councilors Iwabuchi Tomo on the same day urged the Fukushima NPP operator to suspend the release of the ALPS-treated radiation-tainted water into the ocean until the cause of the accident is determined.

An anti-nuclear power group in Fukushima City on February 14 took to the streets to protest against the radioactive water leakage at the Fukushima NPP, appealing to passersby to support its demand for a halt to the ongoing ocean release of the radiation-tainted water.

The group’s co-head Machida Kazufumi (JCP Fukushima Prefectural Committee chair) said, “Fukushima fishermen continue to oppose the ocean release of Fukushima water. The national government and TEPCO should take the latest leakage accident seriously and decide to cease discharging contaminated water into the ocean without delay.”
