2011 March 30 - April 5 [GREAT EAST JAPAN DISASTER]

JCP urges gov’t to aid N-accident-hit municipalities

March 30, 2011
Japanese Communist Party Chair Shii Kazuo on March 29 urgently made representations to Prime Minister Kan Naoto, demanding that the government take measures to reduce people’s hardships caused by the ongoing nuclear power plant crisis in Fukushima Prefecture.

This petition is based on demands that Shii received from leaders of disaster-hit municipalities, including Fukushima’s Iitate Village and Minamisoma City, during his visit of the area on March 27.

Meeting with Fujii Hirohisa, assistant to the prime minister, in the Diet building, Shii demanded that the government provide accurate data on radioactive pollution without delay to local governments and residents affected by the nuclear plant csisis; take responsible action to avoid harmful rumors about local farm products; and make clear its intention to compensate for damage.

Shii also requested that if the government will not consider issuing an evacuation order to the people living within 20 to 30km of the Fukushima No.1 Nuclear Power Plant, it should guarantee the delivery of relief goods.

After the meeting at a news conference, Shii said, “The government must explain to the public about its strategy to deal with the current nuclear crisis and its prospects of success as clearly and transparently as possible.”

Shii also said, “I will visit the disaster-hit prefectures of Miyagi and Iwate to listen to disaster victims’ demands and make a concrete proposal to the government based on their demands.”
