An atomic bomb sufferers organization on April 21 called on the Health Ministry, the Cabinet Office and Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) to issue disaster-victim certificates and official healthcare handbooks to the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant accident victims.
The Japan Confederation of A- and H-Bomb Sufferers Organizations (Nihon Hidankyo), which represents A-bomb survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Secretary General, Tanaka Terumi, at a press conference in Tokyo stated, “As a survivor of the U.S. atomic bombing 66 years ago, I call for prompt and appropriate measures to take care of victims suffering from damages caused by radioactivity from the Fukushima accident.”
He pointed out that it was particularly important to provide information about what kind of radioactive substances and how such substances are leaking into the atmosphere, and put emphasis on the danger of internal exposure to radiation which continuously affects internal organs and causes health problems years later.
Hidankyo demands that the government issue national common disaster-victim certificates to all afflicted people and evacuees; deliver official healthcare handbooks to all victims of the Fukushima nuclear accident, and carry out medical examinations at least once a year at government expense.
Hidankyo calls on TEPCO to deliver the healthcare handbooks to nuclear workers who are working at the risk of their lives at the nuclear power plant facility.
In order to remove public fears and eliminate discrimination against disaster-victims, the government and TEPCO should provide accurate information about damages caused by radiation, stated Hidankyo.
