US fighter jets moving to Iwakuni not allowed: two ministers

March 23, 2012
The Japanese government on March 22 said that it will not allow the U.S. forces to relocate their carrier-borne fighter jets from the U.S. Astugi base in Kanagawa prefecture to the U.S. Iwakuni base in Yamaguchi prefecture unless the Futenma base relocation is implemented.

Foreign Minister Genba Koichiro and Defense Minister Tanaka Naoki stated this in writing during a meeting with Yamaguchi Prefectural Governor Nii Sekinari and Iwakuni City Mayor Fukuda Yoshihiko.

The two ministers denied the report that they are considering the construction of a training site for Field Carrier Landing Practice at the Iwakuni base.
