JCP criticizes Tokyo’s bid for 2020 Olympics

June 8, 2012
At a meeting of the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly special committee on the 2020 Olympic bid on June 7, Japanese Communist Party representative Tazoe Tamio urged the Tokyo Metropolitan government to withdraw from the competition.

Tazoe showed a copy of the Tokyo’s application files for the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games which was submitted to the International Olympic Committee. He stated that the metropolitan government plans to construct facilities for competitive swimming at the Tatsumi Seaside Park in Koto Ward which is operated by a private company under the Tokyo government’s designated administrator system.

He said, “The metropolitan government in the application claims that green spaces would be created around competition venues. However, in reality, the construction of swimming facilities would destroy nearly 40% of the park’s green space.”

Citing that 17 corporations expressed their support for Tokyo’s bid for the 2016 Olympics while only four expressed support for the present bid, Tazoe said, “This indicates that even corporations are not willing to provide financial support for the bid.”
