USFJ makes another helicopter emergency landing

December 3, 2008
A U.S. Blackhawk helicopter from U.S. Army Camp Zama in Kanagawa Prefecture made an emergency landing at the mouth of the River Fuji in Shizuoka Prefecture on December 1.

This was the second such emergency landing this year, after one that took place in June in Kanagawa by a helicopter from the U.S. Yokota Air Base in Tokyo.

The Kanagawa Prefectural Peace Committee on December 1 sent a letter of protest to the Commander of the U.S. Army in Japan, Major General Francis J. Wiercinski.

Demanding that the commander make a thorough investigation of the cause of the emergency landing and make sure that no U.S. military helicopters fly over residential areas near U.S. Camp Zama, the peace committee called for the base to be closed and the base site to be returned to Japan without delay.

On June 11, a UH-1N helicopter from the U.S. Yokota Air Base made an emergency landing on a sandbar along the River Sagami in Sagamihara City, Kanagawa Prefecture.
