The Nago City Assembly in Okinawa Prefecture on March 8 unanimously adopted a resolution opposing a plan to relocate the U.S. Marine Corps Futenma Air Station to Camp Schwab in the city. The resolution was sent to Prime Minister Hatoyama Yukio and other cabinet ministers concerned.
The assembly also adopted a protest resolution against Kamei Shizuka, leader of the People’s New Party, which presented the “onshore” relocation plan.
The assembly resolutions criticize the “onshore” plan as all it does is move the aircraft noise pollution and dangers associated with the Futenma base from Ginowan City to Nago City.
Before the adoption of the resolutions, Nago Mayor Inamine Susumu made his first policy speech after the election in January, saying that he resolves to oppose any new base off or on the shore of the Henoko district.

In Tokunoshima Island in Kagoshima Prefecture, which is listed as a relocation candidate site for the Futenma Air Station, 600 islanders on the evening of March 7 gathered to oppose the plan. Heads of all of the three towns on the island expressed their opposition to the government plan.
