2008 December 3 - 9 [JCP]

Shii meets with Singaporean ambassador

December 9, 2008
Japanese Communist Party Chair Shii Kazuo on December 8 met with Singaporean Ambassador Tan Chin Tiong at JCP headquarters.

Tan said that he knows that the JCP plays an important role in helping those in need of assistance most and asked Shii how the JCP continues to be influential even after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Shii said that the JCP firmly opposed Soviet interference and hegemony, and that, through this struggle, it realized that the Soviet Union had nothing in common with socialism.

Referring to the JCP statement on the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union, which welcomes the dissolution of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, Shii said, “The JCP has been able to be active thanks to this clear position regarding the fall of the Soviet Union.”

Shii acknowledged that Singapore contributed to the adoption last year of the Charter of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) as the regional organization’s chair nation and that member states to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC) have increased to 25.

Tan said that the TAC encourages peaceful resolutions of conflicts and wants to turn Asia into a peaceful region.
