Shii comments on S. Korean presidential election results

December 21&22, 2012
Japanese Communist Party Chair Shii Kazuo on December 20 in his comment on the South Korean presidential election results said, “In order to build lifelong friendly relations with South Korea, it is crucial for Japan to adopt a position to correct its past mistakes of war of aggression and colonial rule.”

Shii pointed out that reflecting Korean people’s demand, both candidates during the presidential election campaign called on Japan to deal with the issue of historical awareness in a positive manner.

Shii said that based on historical facts, the Japanese government should clearly state that Japan colonized Korea by military force and should offer apology and compensation to Korean victims of Japanese military sex slavery. That in itself would pave the way for opening negotiations in regard to the Takeshima issue as well, Shii added.

On the next day, the JCP chair sent to president-elect Park Geun-hye of the ruling Saenuri Party the following congratulatory message:

Please accept my heartfelt congratulations on your election as the 18th President of the Republic of Korea.

I hope that your government will succeed in developing peace and prosperity in the Northeast Asian region as well as improving Japan-South Korea relations.

I will make my utmost efforts to have the Japanese government foster friendship with your nation through addressing the pending issues existing between our nations based on accurate historical interpretation.
