Pushed by JCP, Tokyo gov’t will improve financial support for care facility operators

August 1, 2014
Tokyo Governor Masuzoe Yoichi on July 31 announced that the local government will increase support measures for land purchase by private care facilities. This announcement is in line with proposals made by the Japanese Communist Party.

According to the governor, private operators of childcare centers and nursing homes for the elderly will be able to use Tokyo-owned land at a lower rent.

In addition, Tokyo will make at least 30 hectares of space available over the next 10 years as candidate sites for care facilities by rebuilding old public housing complexes. The metropolitan government will lease those sites to care facility operators.

The JCP metropolitan assembly members’ group has been calling on the Tokyo government to take measures to increase the number of care facilities for children and older people. JCP lawmaker Kachi Kayoko in June at an assembly meeting demanded that the Tokyo metropolitan government make a list of government-owned land available for care facilities and provide the land with lower rates of rent for care service operators. The JCP legislators’ group on July 16 also made a representation to the governor for that purpose.
