2014 December 17 - 23 [JCP]

JCP is dominant in the percentage of Dietwomen

December 22, 2014
Women Dietmembers of the Japanese Communist Party account for 31.3% of its total number of seats in both Houses as a result of the December 14 general election, making the largest percentage of women representatives among all political parties.

In contrast, the Liberal Democratic Party, despite its proclaimed “promoting” of women’s participation in society, the number of female Dietmembers out of its 291 seats in the House of Representatives is 25 which accounts for only 8.6% of its seat total. With both Houses combined, the percentage still remains at a dismal 10.1%.

Six of the 21 JCP Dietmembers in the House of Representatives are women. In the House of Councilors, the JCP has four women out of its eleven seats. During the election campaign, the party publicized its proposal released in October for an end to discrimination against women and for a gender equal society.

Examining the percentage of Dietwomen out of each party’s seats in both chambers, the Democratic Party of Japan comes in at second largest (13.7%) followed by the Komei Party (10.9%).
